Flordia college students’ attitudes toward UFOs

September 7, 2012Comments No comments

Back in 2000, a study was published that investigated college students’ attitudes toward UFOs. The sample consisted of 269 college students at a university in Florida, U.S. It would be interesting to see if today, 12 years later, beliefs and opinions have changed. In this time and age, several new UFO videos are uploaded to YouTube every day, and even the mainstream media are reporting on the more interesting (or weird) sightings.

College students in 2000:

  • 49% believed extraterrestrial life forms exist, while 12% did not.
  • 27% believed that abductions by aliens were possible, while 29% did not believe in abductions.
  • 53% said they believe the government has knowledge of UFO sightings, whereas 12% did not think so.
  • Only 7% believed that aliens are responsible for crop circles, while 49% did not.
  • 11% thought the U.S. government is responsible for UFOs, whereas 61% did not think so.
  • However, 34% of the college students believe that the U.S. government has concrete evidence of UFO’s with 17% who believe it does not.

The study concludes:

It appears from the results of the survey of the college students’ attitudes from the conservative, bible-belt, college in Northwest Florida, that the their attitudes – at least toward UFO’s and aliens – are not much different than those of people across the nation. This may be due in part to their exposure to national news and events.

The full study can be found here. Does anyone know of more recent studies?
