Swedish UFO enthusiast takes on Niagara Falls mystery

January 21, 2011Comments 9 comments

The strange light phenomenon over Niagara Falls has been getting a lot of attention since October 2009, when it was first observed, but it has not yet been explained. Something is seemingly hovering at an unknown height above the city, occasionally reflecting light from one of the city casino’s spotlights. Whatever it is, it has been seen by hundreds of people, made the local news and been photographed and captured on film countless of times.

Swedish UFO enthusiast J.M. had already been following the case for a couple of months when he decided to hop on a plane to Canada for some real-life, actual UFO hunting. This was in the beginning of January 2011. Since arriving in Niagara Falls, he has witnessed the phenomenon firsthand on numerous occasions and recorded several videos.

This one was filmed on January 20, 2011. Says J.M.:

I can’t explain it any other way than that something’s up there, something static, staying in one place, reflecting back light from the relatively wide spotlights which really are about 4-5 times as wide as the reflection.

So what’s up there? Nobody seems to know.

It’s not a blimp or balloon, and the light pillar hypothesis falls on the fact that the phenomenon has been observed in August, when the air is too warm for light reflecting ice crystals to form. Similarly, the theory that the spotlights are reflected off the clouds does not hold water since the phenomenon can be seen whether the sky is cloudy or not.

Niagara Falls based YouTube users shivercanada and handeroo have been documenting the phenomenon for some time and they too have captured some interesting footage. This video, for example, was shot by handeroo on January 7, 2011. The reflective properties of whatever’s up there can clearly be seen.

This video from shivercanada shows the phenomenon against a cloud free sky with stars and satellites visible above the light reflection. Best footage start at 2:45.

So, what do we know?

The phenomenon is stationary and can be observed for hours at a time, whether it’s cloudy or not, windy or still. It seems to come and go at will and is not tethered to anything, rendering the balloon or blimp scenario moot. It’s completely quiet and can sometimes be seen from miles away.

With this in mind and after watching the videos, what do you guys think? Strange weather phenomenon? Mist from the falls? I’m stumped.

  1. This case is very similar to the ‘Norwood [Ohio] searchlight’ of 1949. See: http://crapfromspaceandtime.blogspot.com/2009/09/ufos-one-year-at-time-1949-norwood.html
I’m not sure what to make of it, to be honest.

  2. Thanks for writing an article about me (and the UFO)! Noticed a little spelling error I did there as well. Supposed to say “4-5 times as wide”.

By the way, this thing’s big. And I don’t just mean physically. I’m currently looking for a scientist over on the American side to verify some of my findings. If the scientist agrees with my conclusion… yowza. I’ll keep you posted on the blog.

Niagara Falls is definitely the number 1 UFO hotspot in the world right now.

  3. Well yeah intriguing. There is definitely something up there. I would say it is cigar shaped, judging from the two lights on either side of it and since the reflection only comes off from a small portion of the unknown object.

You know what else is intriguing? That no one thought of shining every spotlight on that thing? Or going up there with a chopper? Or firing a flare at it to light it up? Or calling the air force or something? I mean this guy J.M. from Sweden traveled all the way there and never thought about investigating it up close? Has anyone else gone up there? Do we know?

    • I’ve thought of all of those things, except the flare. We’ve already tried aiming Powerful, handheld flashlights at it without success. The next idea would be to connect som kinda floodlights to a car and use a mirror to reflect it upwards.

Tried contacting the helicopter people, but no reply yet. I doubt they want to be associated with this thing. So don’t worry, I’m on it.

      • try directing more light from the same position as the spotlight. may be very angle dependant. when this is happening, can it be seen from all places, or is the reflection directed to only a certain area?

  4. Also… why is it not a blimp?

    • not a blimp, for a couple very valid reasons. First, a blimp would sway and move in the wind. Would not matter how many tethers it had. There are NO tethers in the area. Who owns this blimp? And why do they have IT up there? If you say advertising, why in the dead of winter, usually later at night and very obscure. Also, the area is a no fly zone for low flying craft. A blimp would be required to have navigation lighting on it. Watch ALL videos on the NIAGARA UFO playlist on youtube. Starts from the beginning to the latest video. More than 40 so far.I have personally seen this enough times to know that there IS SOMETHING UP THERE!!.
